Dr. Sean McCarthy visits Glenville NS

We were very lucky to receive a visit from our local energy expert Dr.Sean McCarthy who took time out of his very busy schedule to teach us about renewable energy. Sean brought a variety of gadgets including a radio, a torch and toy helicopter all of which operate using solar energy. He also set up a water pump which works using solar panels. Sean gave our Green Team a mini-lesson and they then passed on the information to the rest of the school. See below for some pictures:

Glenville NS Green Schools Cake Sale

The green team held a very successful cake sale

on November 26th. This was to raise funds for

Activities throughout the year.

We had tons of cakes . All the kids brought loads of buns. The green team set up the sale in the morning selling started at 10 am. We had loads of buns left so we had a raffle and we had to ask questions in the classes.

We made 339.00 euro. We had planned a trip to Millstreet to see a windfarm the next week but the weather was too bad.

We were really happy.

WELL DONE EVERYONE

Glenville NS No/Low Energy Day

On Friday the 19th of November we had a No/Low Energy Day where we turned all electricity off. No plugs or switches or lights were on. We turned the photocopier off at ten so all the teachers had to get their photocopying done before then. Anne in the office also turned all her computers and other electrical appliances off aswell.

We also wore green. Some people even made flags and posters. We did an energy reading too, we only used 5 units from 9:20 to 3:00 and normally we use 27 units or over. It was a great result. WE plan to do another one next year when the weather is better.

Glenville NS Green Schools update

The school year of 2009-2010 was very productive in relation to our progress in achieving our second Green Flag. The whole school made tremedous efforts and were led very well by a very motivated Green Team.. A big thank you to Kate O’ Donoghue, Laura o’ Keefe, Cian Dorgan, Pearse Maloney, Maeve Sheehan and Jason Power who did such a good job this year. In September we will be appointing a new Green Team to move forward our progress and hopefully our second Green Flag willl be flying before June 2011!

See below for some of our Green School events and outings this year;

River Lee Hotel visit

The Glenville National School Green Team visited the River Lee Hotel where we met with managers Scott Barclay and Orla O’ Callaghan. We toured the hotel and looked at all the energy, water and waste saving ideas they use. We got lots of helpful ideas. The hotel are currently striving for ‘gold’ status which is similar to our ‘energy’ flag. We saw their waste and recycling, pool, gym rooms and generators, etc.

We finished off the day at the Mardyke Bowling Complex, compliments of the hotel and had a really great day.
